California Motorcyclist Safety Program offers the Motorcyclist Training Course (MTC), which is designed for the novice rider with no (or limited) street-riding experience. This 16 hour, two-day course includes both online zoom classes and on-cycle instruction. Although designed for new riders, any rider that has not taken a motorcycle course will benefit from this course. You will learn fundamental skills required to operate the motorcycle and progress to street riding skills and strategies. Topics covered include fear, understanding how motorcycles turn, proper cornering strategies, and emergency crash avoidance skills. The course is based on the most current research in rider safety and utilizes modern training methods.
This course is mandatory for those under 21 years of age desiring a motorcycle or scooter license. The class fee is discounted to $395 for students under 21 (proof of age required upon first day of class). For students under 18, a parent must show ID (or legal guardian proof of guardianship) and sign a waiver at the start of the first class.
The course runs on weekend, Saturday from 7:00am to 5:00pm (classroom and riding instruction and written exam) and Sunday from 7:00am - 5:00pm (riding instruction and riding skills exam). You will have 6 hours of classroom instruction and 10 hours of riding instruction. Be sure to arrive approximately :30 minutes prior to the start of your class in order to park and complete any paperwork necessary for your course. You must be in your seat at the start of class - if you are late, you will be dismissed from the class.
Note: It is very important that you attend all days of this class. If you have to miss any portion of the 2 days you must contact our office before the session begins or you risk losing your space and forfeiting your registration fees. You can call (562) 467-5050 (Press #1), Mon. - Fri. between 8am - 4pm. & Sat. 8am-1pm. If you have an emergency after hours, please email us immediately at CommunityEd@Cerritos.edu. There are no refunds given. In the event of an emergency you may be able to retake the portion of the class you missed for a fee.
Please bring water, snack(s) and a sack lunch, as there will not be enough time to leave campus to purchase food. When there are breaks, you also need to return at the designated time or you will not be able to continue and will be dismissed.
It is mandatory for you to bring either a valid CA DMV driver’s license, permit or ID card to the first class.
A motorcycle will be provided for you in this course; if you are wanting to complete the course on a scooter, you must notify us upon registering for the class. Please bring a DOT approved 3/4, full face, or modular helmet, if you need one, we will provide one. You must also wear proper eye gear, shatterproof glasses or motorcycle specific googles are acceptable. Additionally, you will need to be dressed in a long sleeve shirt or jacket, full-fingered street-motorcycle-specific or leather gloves (mechanics-style gloves, off-road gloves, etc. are NOT allowed), long, thick jeans or pants (no spandex/stretch pants) without rips or holes and sturdy, padded, over the ankle boots (no fashion boots, or high heeled boots), leather high-top sneakers are allowed (canvas or cloth sneakers are NOT allowed). You also need full length socks (no ankle socks); you must have no exposed skin showing. You need protection on every part of your body - if you do not show up to class with the proper gear, you will be dismissed.
In order to be successful in this course, you are required to have physical stamina, motor-coordination, the ability to ride and balance a bicycle and mental alertness. In accordance with State safety standards, early dismissal may occur during the riding portion of the class if you do not demonstrate safe riding techniques (as determined by the instructor). Your attendance and participation is not a guarantee that you will be able to successfully complete the course and be granted the certificate of completion.
Students successfully completing the class will receive the DMV completion certificate, which may waive the riding skills test at the California DMV. Your certificate will be mailed to you within 10 working days of your course completion. (Note: You will still need to take the written test at the DMV).
