6 HOURS - certificate awarded upon successful completion of course. Ayurveda is the traditional healing system of India and holds vast historical knowledge and many useful techniques to finding health. Whether for yourself, or to apply to assisting your massage clients, this class is open to all. Western medical research has demonstrated that our physical body both gives off and absorbs electrical and chemical energy. By understanding how this energy interacts with the various anatomical systems, particularly the nervous system, we can “observe and correct” imbalances.  This class will focus on the Ayurvedic paradigm of energy organization and how to address balancing the chakras. Deeply relaxing and healing these techniques can be used on friends, family or clients. This energy work is completed with clothing on, or for the massage practitioner can be incorporated into a full body relaxation massage.  Prerequisite:  none (but suggested to have taken Ayurveda: An Introduction course prior to enrolling in this course). Required Reading / Instructional Materials:  Please bring a fitted sheet, a pillow case, and a bottle of water to class.  Also bring a blanket if you tend to get cold.     Recommended Reading:  Modalities for Massage and Bodywork, 2nd edition, by Elaine Stillerman

14 HOURS - certificate awarded upon successful completion of course.   All assessment is a learned skill, and the ability to incorporate this skill into massage sessions enhances the quality of the treatment given. Palpation assessment is the use of touch to examine the body. Our hands are our most versatile and exquisite assessment tools. They need to be trained to interpret what they perceive accurately. For the therapeutic massage professional, palpation is an essential and continuous process, and the hands become skilled with experience. The main considerations for palpation in basic massage are the ability to differentiate between types of tissue, the ability to distinguish differences of tissue texture in the same tissue types, and the ability to palpate through various layers from superficial to deep. We will be doing several fun activities to encourage this sense as it develops into a skill!     Course Objectives:  Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: Understand that hands are our most versatile, exquisite assessment tool; Begin to develop the ability to differentiate between types of tissue; Begin to develop the ability to distinguish differences of tissue texture in same tissue types; Begin to develop the ability to palpate through tissue layers from superficial to deep; Understand that the massage therapist’s entire self must become sensitive to subtle differences in the client’s body;  Discern that with palpation what is going on must be felt and not thought about because too much thinking shifts awareness away from kinesthetic input; Identify and address during massage elements relating to function and dysfunction of posture through palpation; Complete a palpation assessment of the various layers, tissues and systems of the body; and Use massage application as palpation assessment.  Course Prerequisites: none   Required Reading / Instructional Materials:  Mosby’s Fundamentals of Therapeutic Massage, 5th Edition by Sandy Fritz, Essentials Sciences for Therapeutic Massage, 4th Edition by Sandy Fritz & M. James Grosenbach.  Also bring massage setup (flat and fitted twin sheet, pillow case, 3 hand towels and hand/foot sanitizer) and a bottle of drinking water.   Recommended References:  The Muscle and Bone Palpation Manual by Joseph E Muscolino.
